Users and car enthusiasts are criticizing the brand, stating that the vehicle’s top speed, which ends at 175 km/h, does not match the GTI identity.
German customers argue that the speed limit of the vehicle, which is marketed as a performance-oriented model, is insufficient. This situation calls into question the balance between the brand’s GTI heritage and its electric transformation process.
Speed Limit and Historical Comparison
Volkswagen’s first legendary Golf GTI model, launched in 1976, produced 110 horsepower with its 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine. This classic model, reaching a speed of 182 km/h, was one of the vehicles that set the performance standards for its time.
The new electric ID. Polo GTI, despite boasting a considerably high power output of 226 horsepower, has a top speed limited to 175 km/h. Despite 50 years and a power difference of 116 horsepower, it is noteworthy that the new model is 7 km/h behind the 1976 Golf GTI in terms of speed.
Volkswagen Board Member Kai Grünitz acknowledges that overall feedback on the vehicle has been largely positive. However, Grünitz confirms that criticism focuses particularly on this 175 km/h speed limit and that the company is evaluating the possibility of raising this limit.
Technical Challenges and Competitive Situation
Increasing the speed limit is not just a simple software update for Volkswagen. Driving at high speeds for extended periods significantly increases the load on the vehicle’s battery, electric motor, and reduction gear.
This presents engineering challenges as it requires a much different level of thermal and mechanical resistance than instantaneous acceleration. Volkswagen management states that it will make its final decision after thoroughly examining the matter.
The ID. Polo GTI lags behind one of its toughest competitors, the Peugeot e-208 GTI, in terms of performance data. The new electric Polo GTI completes the 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.8 seconds, while the Peugeot e-208 GTI achieves the same acceleration in 5.5 seconds.
Furthermore, the Peugeot e-208 GTI reaches a top speed of 180 km/h, putting it ahead of its competitor in this area as well. According to automotive experts, Volkswagen could end these discussions by symbolically raising the 175 km/h limit to 185 km/h.
Such a move could help the ID. Polo GTI preserves its performance heritage, surpassing both the 1976 Golf GTI and its French rival. The vehicle, which is expected to launch at a price under €33,000, will begin pre-sales this autumn.
