We compared the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 Pro processors. 2nm technology, benchmark scores and new generation features are here.
Qualcomm and MediaTek introduced their flagship processors, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 Pro, in simultaneous announcements in September 2026, ushering in a new era in the smartphone world. Built on TSMC’s advanced 2nm manufacturing technology, these chips promise a major leap in both performance and power efficiency for portable devices.
Powering devices such as the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max and Vivo X500 Pro Max, these new generation hardware stand out with their AI integration and image processing capabilities. These two giants in the market are redefining the user experience, from portable gaming to professional video recording, with their technical specifications and fierce competition.
Comparing the Processor Specifications
The new generation of portable processors stands out with their architectural structures and core speeds. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 makes a strong statement in terms of raw power with its prime cores reaching 5.0 GHz.
In contrast, MediaTek optimizes multi-processing capabilities in its Dimensity 9600 Pro model by using a customized 2+3+3 core configuration. Both chipsets support the latest standards with LPDDR6 memory support and UFS 5.0 storage units.
Benchmark Tests Reveal the Differences
According to Geekbench 7 results, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 outperforms its competitor by 21% in single-core processes. However, the Dimensity 9600 Pro takes the lead by a small margin in multi-core scenarios.
In AnTuTu tests, while Snapdragon appears to be ahead by approximately 6% in the overall score, MediaTek achieves a 5% higher score in the graphics processing unit (GPU).
AI and Image Processing Capabilities Are Increasing
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 comes with a new architecture that runs AI workloads directly on the GPU. This approach minimizes latency by allowing data to be processed without needing to be sent to the NPU unit.
MediaTek, on the other hand, positions the NPU 1090 unit as a central hub, coordinating AI-powered processes simultaneously with the GPU and CPU. On the camera side, both chips make advanced features such as 8K 60fps video recording and 4K 240fps slow motion standard.
The Future of Mobile Devices is Taking Shape
Currently limited to the Chinese market, these chips will reach a wider audience with devices that will be launched in global markets in the coming months. The approximately 37% power efficiency achieved thanks to 2nm technology proves that smartphones to be released next year will offer both faster performance and longer battery life. Software optimizations that manufacturers will make with these chips will play a critical role in determining the course of the competition.
