Mercedes-Benz has taken its collaboration with ProLogium to the next level in its solid-state battery research, expected to revolutionize electric vehicle technology. The automotive giant has strengthened its more than a decade-long partnership with the Taiwan-based power firm, gaining priority access to next-generation battery cells.

This strategic move encompasses the testing processes for fourth-generation battery cells that Mercedes-Benz aims to use in its future electric vehicle models. The company will conduct electrical, thermal, and safety tests of these advanced batteries both at its own facilities and at independent organizations.

Advantages of Solid State Batteries

Solid-state batteries have long been considered the holy grail of battery technology. Replacing the liquid electrolytes found in classic lithium-ion batteries with non-flammable solid materials makes this technology more reliable.

This new structure allows batteries to have higher power density. In addition, faster charging capability and longer service life are among the main advantages offered by this technology.

The fourth-generation cells developed by ProLogium are equipped with ceramic separator technology. The use of non-flammable inorganic electrolyte stands out as a valuable technical detail that enables high power output of the batteries.

Mercedes-Benz is evaluating this technology not only within its own company but also in a similar development process with other manufacturers such as BYD, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, VW, Stellantis and Chery. Some models are expected to be launched within the next 12 months.

Huge Investment in Europe

ProLogium already operates a large battery factory in Taiwan. To strengthen its presence in the European market, the company plans to build a new facility in Dunkirk, France.

This new facility aims to reach a total capacity of 44 GWh. The factory aims to supply battery cells to customers across Europe, including Mercedes-Benz.

Tests with Factorial Energy

Mercedes-Benz is not limiting itself to ProLogium in its solid-state battery research. The German manufacturer is also actively testing lithium-metal battery cells from the American company Factorial Energy.

In a test conducted last year, a Mercedes-Benz EQS model equipped with Factorial batteries traveled 1,205 kilometers on a single charge. It is claimed that the vehicle still had a range of around 137 kilometers at the end of the test.

Mercedes-Benz aims to shape the future of electric mobility with these kinds of collaborations. Do you think solid-state batteries can completely eliminate the range issue, which is the biggest obstacle to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles?
