Google has announced a major update for Android Auto, which includes a new interface, 3D navigation and improved Gemini features. Here are all the details.
Google has announced the most comprehensive design and functionality update to date for the Android Auto platform. The new generation software offers a more modern interface with the Material 3 Expressive design language, advanced customization options and more capable Gemini support.
The system gains widget support, allowing drivers to pin important data such as weather information or smart home controls directly to the home screen. Described as the biggest innovation on Google Maps in more than ten years, the Immersive Navigation mode strengthens the navigation experience with detailed 3D visuals for roads and buildings.
A new era in entertainment and sound systems
Android Auto now allows watching applications such as YouTube in full HD resolution and 60fps while the vehicle is parked. In supported vehicles from brands such as BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, the video stream automatically switches to audio mode when driving starts, allowing podcasts or long content to be listened to without interruption.
On the sound experience side, Dolby Atmos support is included in the system. This technology, which can be used in compatible vehicles and applications, aims to create a cinema-like atmosphere in the vehicle, especially by combining it with the advanced sound systems of electric vehicles.
A more proactive driving experience with Gemini
Gemini integration is being expanded later in the year with more contextual and proactive capabilities for phone users with Gemini Intelligence. The system can offer one-touch response suggestions by matching address information in incoming messages with calendar or e-mail data.

In vehicles with the Google built-in system, Gemini directly accesses vehicle data, helping drivers question the meaning of warning lights or get information on issues such as luggage capacity. In addition, using the vehicle’s front cameras, Google Maps can better analyze lane position and provide more precise directions in real time.
Google states that these updates will be gradually rolled out to vehicles throughout the year. How do you think these innovations in in-car entertainment systems will affect the driving experience?
