WhatsApp Will Detect Fraudulent Messages

WhatsApp Will Detect Fraudulent Messages

To protect its users, WhatsApp is developing the Scam Alert feature, which detects fraud attempts without reading messages. Here are the details about the new security system.

In order to increase user security, WhatsApp is working on a new feature called ‘Scam Alert’, which detects suspicious messages from individuals who are not registered in its contact list. The well-known messaging application aims to identify possible fraud attempts without reading message contents or sending them to servers, thanks to local technologies running on the device. This feature, which is under development, will allow users to be more careful about notifications from unknown numbers. Meta aims to maximize security without compromising the end-to-end encryption principle to protect user privacy.

  • WhatsApp is developing a new security system that automatically scans suspicious messages from unknown numbers.
  • Since all analysis processes occur entirely on the device, no message content is sent to WhatsApp servers.
  • When a suspicious message is detected, users can block the person or decide that they are trustworthy via the warning screen that appears.

Scam Alert Feature Working on Device

WhatsApp continues to improve its security measures without disrupting the user experience. The newly developed Scam Alert feature uses the phone’s own processing power, just like the feature that converts voice messages into text.

In this way, while your information remains confidential, the system can detect suspicious messages in the background.

The new feature takes security to the next level without compromising user privacy.

Users Have Full Control Over Messages

When the system detects a suspicion of fraud, a warning in the form of ‘This may be a fraud’ appears directly on the chat screen.

WhatsApp does not force the user to take any action at this stage. After seeing the warning, the user can block and report the person who sent the message, or continue the conversation by trusting the content of the message. The decision remains entirely at the initiative of the user.

Local Reporting Logs Are Created for Transparency

The application takes steps towards transparency as well as security. Users will be able to access local reports to see when and in what situations the Scam Alert feature is activated.

These log documents are stored on the device and are not shared with WhatsApp. Users will be able to follow the process against fraud attempts by reviewing these reports from the settings menu.

The Feature is Activated Optionally

Scam Alert will be disabled by default and will be left to users’ discretion. Users who want to increase the security layer will be able to manually enable this option through the application settings. This approach allows users to manage their own security preferences and prevents unnecessary notifications.

Testing Process Has Not Started Yet

It is worth noting that this feature, which is currently in the development phase, is not available to beta testers yet.

WhatsApp has not announced an official date for when the feature will be added to the stable version. However, with future updates, the feature is expected to be released first in beta channels and then for all users.
