WhatsApp Launches Username Feature

WhatsApp Launches Username Feature

WhatsApp is gradually introducing its new username feature, which eliminates the obligation to share a phone number.

WhatsApp has gradually started to enable the long-awaited username feature for reasonable users around the world. Previously reserved user names now eliminate the need to share a phone number when connecting with new individuals or businesses.

This feature, available on both Android and iOS platforms, aims to increase the privacy of WhatsApp users and make communication processes more flexible. This innovation, which initially reached a limited user base, will continue to be gradually introduced to more accounts in the coming weeks.

  • WhatsApp users can now connect with new individuals by sharing usernames of their own choosing instead of phone numbers.
  • While the feature is currently active for a limited number of users, it will be rolled out to large audiences in the coming period.
  • Usernames do not replace phone numbers, but offer an alternative layer of privacy for those who simply do not want to share their numbers.
  • In the new system, mutually registered numbers or existing chats continue with the phone number.

WhatsApp Completes the Username Reservation Process

The reservation process, launched last month, allowed users to secure their own identities on the platform. Now, this preparation stage is giving way to active use. Users can now see that their username is active thanks to a notification panel that appears at the top of their chat list.

You no longer need to give your personal phone number when meeting new people.

Usernames Increase Privacy Control

WhatsApp defines this new feature as a critical step for users who want to keep their phone numbers private. Deleting or changing a username can be easily managed from the profile screen in the application settings. As an important detail, when you delete your username, your phone number automatically appears again in your existing chats.

Notification System Updates Changes Instantly

When a person creates a username or updates their existing name, WhatsApp adds an informative notification to the relevant chat. This system helps users verify the identity of the person they are dealing with. These notifications, which appear in the chat instead of push notifications, can be followed by cluster members from the “Member changes” screen.

Username Key Can Be Used for Security

For users who want to take privacy to the next level, WhatsApp recommends the “username key” option, which is an additional security measure. This switch helps you restrict who can find you in a new chat. If someone knows your username but not your key, they will not be able to initiate initial contact with you.

For your security, it is recommended that you share your username key only with people you know.

New Communication Methods Provide Flexibility

Users can reach new people by typing their full username into WhatsApp’s search bar. However, the system does not currently have a directory structure that supports partial matches. For this reason, knowing the correct username is a rule to establish a new relationship.

Gradual Transition Process Continues

This new step by WhatsApp represents a fundamental change in the phone number-focused structure of the application, which has been around for years. Although it is not yet at a global launch stage, the gradual spread of the feature in stable and beta versions gives valuable clues about the future of the platform. More accounts are expected to get this innovation in the coming months.
