Apple’s new generation iPad mini model is preparing to be the company’s first tablet with a water-resistant design. The device is expected to be released by October.

According to the information shared by Mark Gurman, the new iPad mini model will offer a level of protection similar to iPhone devices. This feature will allow the tablet to be used safely in wet environments such as poolside or bathroom.

Innovative Sound System and Design Details

To ensure this water resistance, Apple is developing a vibration-based sound system that eliminates classic speaker holes. The sound radiates from the flat surfaces on the body of the device, completely eliminating the need for speaker grills.

This design approach aims to protect the internal structure of the device by preventing water and dust ingress. A patent of the company dated 2014 lays the foundations of this mechanical acoustic system that produces sound by vibrating flat panels.

It is not yet clear what IP rating the new model will have against water. However, this design change puts the iPad mini model in a position to compete with water-resistant e-book readers such as Kindle Paperwhite.

OLED Screen and Processor Update

The new iPad will be the second iPad series to switch to small, OLED display technology. The 8.4-inch LTPS screen produced by Samsung Display is expected to come with a 60Hz refresh rate.

On the hardware side of the device, a major processor upgrade is planned. Leaks indicate that the A19 Pro or A20 Pro chip will be used in the new tablet.

The current model, introduced in October 2024, was updated with the A17 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence support. Following the price increases in June, the device, which is sold at prices starting from $ 599, is expected to be worth up to $ 100 more in the new OLED model.
