One of the last things you want to encounter when buying a brand-new car is for the instrument panel to go completely dark when you press the start button. Toyota has launched a large-scale recall of 508,000 2025 and 2026 model Camry sedans in the US market due to this serious safety risk.

The malfunction stems from the 7.0-inch digital instrument panel, which transmits all critical information to the driver, from the speedometer to signal notifications. Because the problem only affects lower trim levels that use this small screen, the recall is divided into two parts based on the trim level.

Software Problem Affecting Half a Million Vehicles

Vehicles included in the recall are the LE, SE, and Nightshade trims, and these models use the 7-inch screen. The XLE and XSE packages, having the larger 12.3-inch screen, are not affected by this technical malfunction and are excluded from coverage.

The screen locking and remaining black upon startup not only prevents you from seeing the speed data, but also completely disables the hazard lights, audible and visual signal notifications, and safety warning tones.

This significantly increases the risk of an accident by cutting off the driver’s connection with the surroundings while driving. Toyota has previously offered solutions via remote wireless software updates (OTA) for some of its models. However, this time, 508,000 Camry owners are experiencing this problem need to go to an official Toyota authorized service center.

Authorized service centers aim to completely solve this problem by installing new software on the vehicle’s instrument module free of charge. This is not the first time the Japanese manufacturer has encountered screen blackout complaints; In the last 14 months, they have also conducted various recall campaigns covering Land Cruiser, Mirai, and several Lexus models due to digital panel malfunctions, for example.
