Tesla has taken the official step for its highly anticipated autonomous vehicle. The company announced that it will hold a special event for the Tesla Cybercab launch date on September 3rd in Austin.

Event invitations state that attendees will have the opportunity to experience the future of fully autonomous driving. Tesla announced that this event will be invite-only but will be live-streamed.

The Cybercab will be available for use in Austin via the company’s existing Robotaxi application.

Cybercab Technical Specifications

Designed for two people, the Cybercab is a completely driverless vehicle and therefore has no classic driving controls such as a steering wheel or pedals. This design choice makes the vehicle a very lightweight electric vehicle.

According to regulatory documents submitted to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the vehicle weighs approximately 3,113 pounds. This means it is about 700 pounds lighter than the lightest Model 3.

The Cybercab is powered by a 219-horsepower permanent magnet motor located in the front. The 48 kWh battery pack in the vehicle offers a range of 418 miles according to EPA tests.

However, in real-world conditions, this range is expected to be between 290 and 300 miles. The vehicle’s 165 watt-hour/mile efficiency rating makes it one of the most efficient electric vehicles ever certified.

Expansion of Autonomous Driving Services

Tesla first launched its Robotaxi service in Austin in June 2025. The company aims to rapidly expand this service to states such as California, Nevada, Arizona, and Florida.

Currently, Robotaxi services are only operational in Texas and Florida. According to Electrek, Tesla has approximately 20 to 30 autonomous vehicles operating simultaneously.

Waymo, on the other hand, operates over 500,000 paid trips weekly with 3,000 autonomous vehicles in more than 11 cities. Tesla continues to take various steps to grow its operations.

Last week, the Nevada Transportation Authority approved permits allowing Tesla to commercial provide robotaxi services in Clark County. This permit allows Tesla to deploy up to 5,000 fully autonomous vehicles within the first 12 months.

The company also presented plans to expand its service center in Austin with robotaxi washes and charging stations. For example, applications have been made for a Cybercab car wash facility in Las Vegas.
