The Replaceable Battery Era Begins for Nintendo Switch 2

The Replaceable Battery Era Begins for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo is preparing to release Nintendo Switch 2 models with replaceable batteries to comply with the EU’s new battery regulations.

Nintendo is preparing for an important hardware change for the new generation game console. The company confirmed that it has developed a Nintendo Switch 2 model with a replaceable battery in order to comply with the European Union’s new battery regulations.

The battery regulation, which will come into force by the European Union in 2027, requires manufacturers to make batteries in consumer electronic products easily replaceable by users. Nintendo stated that it has already started working to comply with these legal requirements.

European Union Regulations and New Model Details

Nintendo announced in its European Union compliance paperwork that new Nintendo Switch 2 models with replaceable batteries will be released. The EU Battery Directive, which will come into force on February 18, 2027, requires that batteries in consumer electronic devices can be replaced by users throughout their lifetime.

Nintendo states that it is working on new product versions that meet these needs. In particular, devices associated with the Nintendo Switch 2 family and with model numbers starting with “BEE” will be the first examples of this change.

These new systems with replaceable batteries will be sold alongside existing Switch 2 products rather than replacing existing hardware. These devices will be distinguished by unique model numbers and an additional “OSM” code on their packaging.

Technical Details and Market Prospects

Nintendo has not yet shared detailed information about the technical functioning of the replaceable battery feature. Current Nintendo Switch 2 specifications are expected to remain the same.

This attack represents a valuable change in the gaming world. While users express positive opinions that replaceable batteries can extend the life of the hardware, concerns are also expressed that another production line may increase costs and this may be reflected in sales prices.

It is currently unclear whether the Nintendo Switch 2 model with a replaceable battery will be released in North America, Asia or other regions.

What do you think about this compatible model that will be available for sale in Europe?
