PlayStation Portal cloud gaming infrastructure has arrived on Steam Deck with the Asobi application. This new procedure, which doesn’t require a PS5, makes it possible to play games via the cloud.
Sony’s portable gaming device, PlayStation Portal, now offers cloud gaming infrastructure to Steam Deck users thanks to a third-party application called Asobi: Remote Play. Initially only enabling local streaming via the PS5 console, Portal later made significant progress in cloud gaming with subsequent updates.
Now, this technology is being extended to Steam Deck and Steam Machine devices via the Asobi application, offering a new experience that eliminates console dependency. Users can access games in the PlayStation Plus library directly from the cloud without needing a physical PlayStation 5 console.
Cloud Gaming Experience Takes a New Dimension
The Remote Play technology, which was at the heart of the PlayStation Portal device, initially allowed users to stream games from their own consoles. However, updates have transformed Portal into a standalone cloud gaming device. The Asobi application, developed by third-party developers, successfully integrated this advanced infrastructure into the Steam Deck platform. This allows handheld console users to take advantage of Sony’s extensive game library.
This development, which eliminates console limitations in the portable gaming world, offers gamers great flexibility.
Technical Specifications and Version Differences
The Asobi: Remote Play application offers two different tiers depending on user needs. The free basic configuration promises a stable experience at 1080p resolution and 30 FPS with automatic bitrate adjustment. This service, offered in SDR format, provides sufficient performance for standard player profiles. On the other hand, the paid premium version includes much more professional features.
With a premium subscription, users can access 1080p streaming at 60 FPS, HDR color depth, manual bitrate control, and low latency modes. Additionally, the controller’s haptic feedback and the ability to upscale the image to 4K resolution bring the experience closer to console quality.
Steam Deck owners can now play PS5 games in much higher quality via the cloud.
Hardware Limitations Are Largely Eliminated
This cloud infrastructure, which previously only worked on limited hardware ecosystems, is noteworthy for its seamless operation on Steam Machine devices. These types of third-party solutions, developed outside of Sony’s official software, allow users to utilize their game libraries across different platforms. The wide range of settings offered by the software provides a significant advantage, especially for players who want to optimize streaming quality depending on their internet speed.
