XPSemu, developed for jailbroken consoles, opens the doors for original Xbox games on PS5. This new software successfully runs titles from the original Xbox library on Sony’s new console.

This project takes the console’s hardware potential to a different level. Users can now experience classic games like Halo 2, Forza Motorsport, and Fable on their own devices.

Technical Details of XPSemu

XPSemu is noteworthy as a version of the open-source xemu project specifically adapted for PlayStation 5. Instead of a simple wrapper like the Libretro kernel, the software runs directly as a native application on PS5.

The emulation process is carried out by emulating the Xbox processor via QEMU’s TCG JIT infrastructure. On the graphics side, xemu’s Vulkan backend and the open-source RADV driver optimized for PS5 are used.

The first public Alpha 1 version of the software allows users to launch games directly. Users can adjust game settings, view cover art, and monitor performance indicators through an interface compatible with the DualSense controller.

The built-in resolution support can be increased up to 4x the original Xbox’s 480p resolution. This feature makes games appear clearer on new screens.

The project also takes some technical implementation formulas from PS5SX2, which was developed for PS2 emulation on PS5. PS5SX2’s work is used as a reference in matters such as JIT memory management and reading DualSense inputs.

Game Performance and Future Projects

In initial tests, Halo 2 runs at 30 FPS on standard settings, while the 60 FPS patch offers performance between 36 and 60 FPS. Forza Motorsport performs at 15 to 21 FPS during races, and Fable: The Lost Chapters at 10 to 30 FPS.

The current performance differences are due more to the emulation load on the processor side than the graphics unit. The emulated Xbox processor uses a large portion of the PS5’s processing power, while the GPU side remains mostly under low load.

Developers have achieved significant speed increases in games like Fable by making optimizations specifically for the PS5’s Zen 2 processor. However, save management is not currently available in the software’s current version, and games use their own internal save systems.

On the Xbox 360 side, a developer named BrinoBlitz demonstrated that an early-stage emulator works on the PS5. Additionally, the PS5 Proton project, which aims to run Windows games without installing Linux, continues to be developed with its Wine-based architecture.

All of these projects can only be used on jailbroken PS5 consoles that support homebrew software. Since the software does not include any Microsoft BIOS documentation, users need to obtain the necessary documents from their own hardware.

How do you think playing older generation games on the PS5 in this way will affect the console’s lifespan?
