Samsung’s Rollable Phone Coming in 2028
Samsung has accelerated its work on its first rollable screen smartphone, which it aims to launch in 2028.
After foldable phones, Samsung is preparing to switch to the new generation portable device form factor. The South Korean technology giant aims to accelerate its work on its first rollable screen smartphone and launch it in the first half of 2028.
The company is expected to cooperate with Samsung Display for the display panel it will use in this new generation device. Although the development process is not yet official, reports from the industry show that the project is progressing effectively.
A new era with Galaxy Z Slide
The device, which is known as Galaxy Z Slide within the company, offers a different mechanical structure than classic foldable models. While in foldable phones, the screen folds inwards or outwards with the help of a hinge, in this new design, the screen extends outwards from the body when needed, creating a wide usage area.
According to data shared by research company Omdia, the device is expected to come with a 10-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. While this screen is expected to offer a pixel density of 440 ppi, the device is aimed to provide the tablet experience in smartphone form.
Complex engineering and future technology
Rollable screen technology requires much more complex engineering solutions compared to existing foldable OLED panels. It is of critical importance that the screen maintains its durability during the opening and closing process, remains flat and does not compromise image quality.
Samsung Display has been continuing its work in this field for years and introduced the Flex Hybrid concept at the CES 2023 fair. Rollable Flex technology, which was subsequently exhibited at the SID 2023 fair, attracted attention with its ability to enlarge the screen size more than five times.
If there is no change in the planned schedule, this new device from Samsung may meet the technology world during the launch of the Galaxy S28 series. This development is considered the company’s biggest technological step after foldable phones.
