Read Before Buying: Which Smartphones End of Support This Year?

Is your smartphone running out of software support? We examined the known models that Samsung, Google and Motorola will discontinue by 2027 and their security risks.

Before purchasing a smartphone, it is important to know how long the device will receive software updates. Old models that seem affordable during discount periods may soon become vulnerable to security risks when the manufacturer’s support is discontinued.

Many well-known smartphone models are now in their last year of software support. This means that devices will no longer receive security patches or operating system updates.

The importance of security updates

Smartphones are devices that contain sensitive information such as banking transactions, health information and personal correspondence. When manufacturers discontinue software support, devices are left vulnerable to newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Although running out of software support does not mean that the phone will stop working, if the device does not receive security patches, it increases the risk of your data being stolen. In addition, outdated operating systems become unable to meet new application needs over time and cause performance loss.

Software support policies of brands

Samsung offers different deadlines depending on the device segment, and by 2027, the service periods of models such as Galaxy A14, A54 5G, S23 series, Z Fold4, Z Flip4, A53 5G, S22 series, S21 FE 5G and Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 will end. Google, on the other hand, has determined the support schedule for Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7 and 7 Pro models until 2027.

On the Motorola side, Moto G, Moto G Stylus 5G, Motorola Edge 2024, Moto G Power 5G, Moto G 5G, Moto G Play, Motorola Razr, Razr + and Edge + models will reach the end of their software support in 2027. Although Apple follows a different system than Android manufacturers, updates for devices such as the iPhone 11 and 2020 model iPhone SE may end soon due to performance and hardware needs.

Recommendations for phones whose support period has expired

If you are using a device whose software support has expired or is about to expire, you need to keep your applications as up-to-date as possible. You should avoid connecting to unreliable public Wi-Fi networks and should not install software from outside official app stores.

Being extra careful about suspicious contacts via e-mail or notification is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your personal data. But the safest solution is to switch to a newer and more up-to-date model as much as your budget allows.

What do you think about the end of the software update for your smartphone?
