LG Energy Solution made important statements balancing expectations in the solid-state battery sector. The company predicts that this technology will become widespread in smaller devices before electric vehicles.
Robert Lee, President of LG Energy Solution North America, assessed the current state of this technology at an event held at the new battery facility in Michigan. Lee stated that there are significant challenges in the large-scale production of solid-state batteries.
Production Challenges and Future Expectations
Solid-state batteries hold great potential for electric vehicles thanks to their high power density and advanced thermal profiles. However, mass production of these batteries is a major hurdle for the automotive world to overcome.
Robert Lee stated that this technology could be more easily implemented in smaller form factor devices. It is claimed that smartphones could meet solid-state batteries about a decade before electric vehicles.
Currently, manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Stellantis continue to test semi-solid-state or solid-state battery packs in their prototype vehicles. These tests show that the technology is moving from the laboratory environment to real-world conditions.
In particular, Mercedes-Benz managed to travel 750 miles on a single charge with an EQS prototype equipped with a semi-solid-state battery from Factorial Energy. BMW, on the other hand, uses a battery developed by Solid Power in its i7 prototype.
Semi-solid-state batteries tested in the Dodge Charger Daytona EV model are also increasing activity in the sector. However, for these studies to turn into a commercial product, production processes need to be optimized.
Alternative Battery Technologies and Chinese Competitors
Chinese battery manufacturers BYD, CATL, and Geely are following a rather aggressive schedule in solid-state batteries. These companies aim to begin pilot programs in 2027 and move to widespread deployment by the end of the decade.
LG Energy Solution, on the other hand, aims to increase efficiency by continuing to improve existing lithium-ion battery technologies. The company is working with General Motors on lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) batteries.
These new generation batteries aim to reduce the use of valuable and environmentally impactful minerals such as nickel and cobalt. LMR batteries are planned to be used in large vehicles starting in 2028.
LG Energy Solution is preparing to produce 46-series lithium-ion cells at its new factory in Arizona. These cells aim to achieve 10-minute charging times and higher safety standards.
The company is also conducting pilot programs on sodium-ion batteries for power storage systems. Sodium-ion technology stands out as a valuable option for LGES due to its cost advantage.
