OpenAI, a pioneer in the artificial intelligence world, has begun to clarify its long-awaited IPO schedule. In a statement made at an internal meeting, the company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Sarah Friar, announced that OpenAI will become a publicly traded company in 2027. Friar also signaled that this date could be brought forward if strong financial growth continues at the same pace.
OpenAI Doesn’t See IPO as a Finish Line
OpenAI management defines the IPO not as a definitive goal, but as a new financing step for sustainable growth. Sarah Friar emphasizes that the IPO process will provide access to much larger capital pools to cover the enormous infrastructure and computing costs.
The company filed for a privately held initial public offering with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in June. The massive $122 billion investment raised in March allows OpenAI to act strategically according to market rules and wait for the right time without rushing.
Financial Data and Valuation Table

-
Annualized Revenue (Run Rate): Over $40 billion
-
Latest Investment Raised:$122 billion (March period)

The Race for an IPO with Anthropic Heats Up
Anthropic, the toughest competitor in the AI sector, has also submitted an implicit IPO application to the SEC. Having held preliminary meetings with potential investors, Anthropic is rumored to be able to go public as early as September.
Friar states that the fact that the rival company went public earlier is not a cause for concern for them and that they are focused on their own roadmap. The competition between Anthropic, which has surpassed $60 billion in annualized revenue, and OpenAI appears to directly determine the stability of AI investments on Wall Street.
