Microsoft aims to increase its data center capacity to 38 gigawatts by 2032 to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence.
Microsoft plans to increase its data center capacity to 38 gigawatts by 2032 to meet the growing demand for processing power for artificial intelligence and cloud services. The company’s current Microsoft data center capacity is approximately 12 gigawatts.
According to information shared by Bloomberg, this goal means reaching more than three times the company’s current capacity. The planned expansion includes both owned and leased facilities.
AI Demand Drives Capacity Increase
Approximately 2 gigawatts of the company’s current 12 gigawatt capacity is dedicated to AI-focused chips. This measure is expected to increase to approximately one-third of the projected total capacity of 38 gigawatts.
Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw stated that these planning figures are not accurate. The company refrained from giving any details beyond the data it declared in its latest financial results.
This push for capacity increase is driven by the significant processing power shortage experienced recently. It is said that Microsoft has lost major customers to Competitors due to this bottleneck.
Processing power leased from neocloud providers such as CoreWeave is not included in this capacity planning. The company is following a strategic roadmap to strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Capital expenditures and long-term strategies
Microsoft’s data center investments continue unabated. The company projects capital expenditures of $175 billion by the 2026 calendar year.
A spending of $50 billion is planned for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The company’s total capital expenditures in the last fiscal year reached $145 billion.
The company, wanting to spread costs over a longer period, is increasing the cost of extending data center lease terms from 15 years to 25 years. This strategy aims to reduce annually reported capital expenditures.
This increase in investments highlights the competition among technology giants in the artificial intelligence race. What do you think about Microsoft’s massive capacity increase plan?
