The new generation Xbox console, Project Helix, may not support third-party stores such as Steam and Epic Games. All the details are in our news!
While rumors about the successors of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series Announcement that its new generation consoles were developed under the code name “Project Helix”, the company began to share details that excited the players.
A Hybrid Experience of PC and Console
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s statement on social media, “Project Helix will be a leader in terms of performance and will play both your Xbox and PC games,” officially confirmed the rumors that the new device will have a hybrid structure between a traditional plug-and-play console and a computer. However, after this ambitious announcement, the most anticipated million-dollar question emerged: How exactly will Project Helix run PC games?
Expectations were that the device would provide access to other digital stores such as the Epic Games Store or Steam, and that players could directly download and play games from their existing libraries. But judging by Sharma’s latest statements, the situation may not be as simple as it seems.
Are the Old Administration’s Words Valid?
Famous journalist Stephen Totilo met with Asha Sharma in the latest issue of the Game File newsletter and discussed the details of this integration and Xbox’s special game strategy. During the interview, Totilo recalled the past assertive words of Epic Games Store manager Steve Allison.
In a statement he made in early February, Allison stated that Microsoft was positive about the Epic Games Store and said, “Unless their policies or attitudes change, we definitely plan to be involved in the new Xbox hardware and we will be there from day one.”
Cautious Approach from Sharma
However, new Xbox boss Asha Sharma preferred to rein in expectations on this issue. Stating that they want to keep the platform “open” so that more people can produce and players can personalize and expand their experiences, Sharma underlined that those meetings that Allison mentioned were held with the previous management team (Phil Spencer period) that he was not involved with.
Sharma said, “I was not part of those discussions, so we will make future decisions as a team and together with our partners. We will share more when we are ready.” Although he did not close the doors completely, he made us feel that things were uncertain for now.
As a result, what awaits us?
Looking at the current picture, there is no definitive “No” answer that other digital marketplaces will not be included in Project Helix. But it’s clear that Microsoft is putting its plans back to the drawing board on what exactly it means to have an “open” console and integrate PC features into the Xbox ecosystem.
So, what do you think about the possibility of Project Helix, which is expected to be a hybrid of PC and console, closing its doors to external stores such as Steam and Epic Games Store?
