New Era of Power Management on Macs with macOS 26.5

New Era of Power Management on Macs with macOS 26.5

With the macOS 26.5 update, Apple introduced a new feature that provides power control with external switches for Mac mini, Mac Studio and iMac models.

Apple released macOS Tahoe 26.5 today for all compatible Mac models. This version, which is a minor update, stands out with a new power management feature that is especially relevant to desktop Mac users.

According to the published update notes, a new power control option has been added to the Energy settings section for Mac mini, Mac Studio and iMac models. This feature allows users to shut down or restart their computers via auxiliary accessories such as external switches.

Power Management with Auxiliary Accessories

This new functionality offered by Apple is primarily designed to support the use of accessory accessories for accessibility purposes. Thanks to supported external switches, users can manage the power status of the system without requiring physical interaction.

Although these types of accessibility features are generally developed for individuals with limited mobility, they can also be preferred in different usage scenarios. Anyone who wants to control the power status of their desktop computer via an external switch has the opportunity to benefit from this new setting.

The Mac device may need to have a pre-defined accessory accessory installed for the feature to appear in the Energy section of System Settings. For now, some users may not see this new option in the settings menu immediately after installing the update.

A Small Update and Future Prospects

macOS 26.5 stands out as a minor update that does not contain major changes to the system in general. Apple also released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 on the same day, bringing more comprehensive innovations to these platforms.

On the Mac side, the focus has been on expanding accessibility options and increasing users’ control over their hardware. Apple also offers various accessory suggestions on its official website so that users can use such assistive technologies.

It is curious what kind of experience the new power control feature will provide, especially for desktop users who want to customize their workflows. Are you planning to use this new power control feature that comes with macOS 26.5 and what might be the usage scenarios for you?
