For over a decade, Apple CarPlay has been a popular alternative, allowing drivers to mirror their smartphones onto their car screens. However, recently, many car manufacturers are making a strategic change regarding this Apple CarPlay support in their vehicles.

While this system provides great convenience for drivers, it restricts manufacturers’ control over in-car software and information. This situation is creating a significant turning point in the automotive sector, especially with the proliferation of electric vehicles.

Automobile Manufacturers’ Software Strategy

General Motors is leading this change by gradually phasing out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support from its new electric models. The company prefers to focus on its own software platform in its next-generation vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Blazer EV.

Automobile manufacturers no longer want in-car systems to be merely a screen mirroring tool. In electric vehicles, critical features such as battery preconditioning and charge management need to be deeply integrated with the vehicle’s own software.

GM uses Google’s independent vehicle operating system, General Motors Android Automotive , for this purpose. Thanks to this system, navigation applications can directly calculate the vehicle’s remaining range and charge status.

Company executives state that they do not want the in-car experience to be dependent on a mobile phone. This approach allows manufacturers to track driver data more closely and create new revenue models through related services.

However, this also raises some questions about data privacy. The FTC previously imposed sanctions on General Motors for illegally collecting and selling driver data.

Apple CarPlay and its Vision for the Future

Apple responds to these criticisms with its CarPlay Ultra features

. This new version not only mirrors phone applications but also provides access to critical systems in the vehicle, such as the speedometer and climate controls.

CarPlay Ultra aims to offer a more integrated experience by covering all the vehicle’s screens. However, this solution doesn’t fully address manufacturers’ concerns about phone dependency, as it still requires an iPhone device.

Manufacturers may be reluctant to share data with Apple and collaborate on software development processes. Therefore, the adoption of CarPlay Ultra is currently quite slow.

While some brands, such as Aston Martin, support this technology, many major manufacturers prefer to build their own software ecosystems. For drivers, this means losing the standard interface experience they’ve been accustomed to for years.

Apple stated in 2022 that 79% of car buyers would not choose a model without CarPlay support. Current research shows that more than half of users consider the loss of this feature a reason to give up.

In the coming years, the competition between in-car infotainment systems

and electric vehicle software

is expected to intensify. Do you think having Apple CarPlay support in your car is more valuable, or would you prefer the manufacturer’s own built-in software?

Car manufacturers are backtracking on Apple CarPlay support. So why are brands turning to their own software? Here are the details.
