Work continues on the automatic dark mode feature that Windows 11 users have been waiting for a long time. Microsoft is developing a new system that automates theme switching with the aim of making the operating system more user-friendly.

Although the new feature is not yet generally available, it has started to be tested in Windows Insider versions. This development aims to close the gap between the operating system and platforms such as macOS, Android and iOS in terms of personalization options.

How Will Automatic Theme Switching Work?

Currently, in Windows 11, users have to manually select either the dark or light theme. However, the operating system lags behind other well-known platforms in automatically switching between these two themes depending on the time of day.

According to leaked information, Microsoft is preparing to add a “Schedule auto mode” option to Windows 11 settings in the future. This option will allow users to easily determine when dark and light modes are activated.

The new feature does not seem to be limited to a fixed time range. Windows 11 will also be able to determine sunrise and sunset times using the device’s position services and change the themes accordingly.

The leaked texts state that dark mode can be automatically programmed if position services are activated. When position services are disabled, the start and end times are manually determined by the user will be used.

This system aims to provide users with an ideal visual experience without having to constantly change screen brightness and contrast settings at different times of the day. For users working in low-light environments in particular, automating this transition will be a great convenience.

Location Services and User Experience

Another option is to have the theme change occur when the computer is idle. This way, Windows won’t suddenly change the screen theme while the user is actively working or in an important meeting.

This option specifically aims to prevent distractions from automatic transitions during work. Another detail indicating that the feature is under development is the “Windows.Shell.AutoDarkMode.dll” document found in the System32 folder of Windows 11.

The configuration texts that appeared with the new DLL confirm that automatic theme changes will be more integrated into Windows. However, it is currently unknown when the feature will be fully available to Insider users and when it will arrive in the stable Windows 11 version.

Microsoft’s move aims to increase user control over the operating system and provide a more comfortable working environment. This feature is thought to be quite useful, especially for users who spend time in front of their computers late at night.
