Roblox highlights the new age assumption technology it has developed to ensure user safety on the platform. Company officials state that the era of declaring age by simply checking a box is now over.

In a test conducted by NBC News, kids tried to bypass the platform’s new image selfie-based age verification system. Children using techniques such as fake mustaches failed to pass the system’s firewall.

Age estimation with facial recognition technology

Eliza Jacobs, Deputy Leader of Roblox Security and Product Policy, states that the new technology gives very successful results. Jacobs emphasizes that the system can claim children’s true ages with a deviation of 1.4 years.

The platform started to classify users according to certain age groups, in line with the plans announced in April. Roblox Select account types were launched for users under the age of 16, and Kids account types were launched for users under the age of 9. These account types impose restrictions on chat access and certainly game types.

Users can use official identification documents as well as the image selfie formula to verify their age. In addition, parents have the authority to manually set the age groups of their children.

Security-focused strategy and user implications

Roblox reported that there was a decrease in the number of daily users in April after it introduced the age verification system. However, the company management states that they will not compromise on the vision of security and courtesy on the platform.
