Life-Saving Software Update from Tesla

Life-Saving Software Update from Tesla

Tesla Vision technology increases the level of safety by deploying airbags 70 milliseconds before the moment of impact. Here are the details.

Tesla takes its standards in vehicle safety one step further with its software-focused approach. Using Tesla Vision technology, the company can activate airbags 70 milliseconds earlier compared to conventional vehicles.

This technology allows airbags to inflate and seat belt tensioners to tighten when an unavoidable collision is detected. Thus, safety measures are activated before the driver and passengers move from their seats in the event of a collision.

70 millisecond safety difference

In conventional cars, airbags work by triggering physical impact sensors in the bumper and chassis. However, for these sensors to work, a physical impact must occur, and this causes the loss of valuable milliseconds.

Tesla Vision, on the other hand, accelerates this process by foreseeing the collision. According to the information shared by Tesla on its official X account, this early intervention can make the difference between serious injuries and surviving the accident unscathed.

Tesla’s Cybertruck chief engineer Wes Morrill attributes the success of the system to the huge data fleet the company has. While traditional manufacturers develop their safety systems through limited laboratory testing, Tesla analyzes millions of kilometers of real-world driving data.

Morrill notes that physical sensors have a filter to prevent false openings. By seeing the approaching impact, Tesla Vision deactivates this filter earlier and allows the system to react faster.

Security with software updates

This feature is not limited to newly produced vehicles and also reaches the existing fleet via wireless software updates. Vision-based airbag deployment was first introduced to users with version 2025.32.3.

The technology in question is active in 2023 and later Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, as well as some 2022 models and new Model S and Model X units. Tesla improved the side impact detection capabilities of older vehicles with the 2021.36 version released in 2021.

In the automobile world, it is a rare occurrence for your vehicle to become safer than the day you bought it. Tesla continues to expand the boundaries of security by combining high-definition cameras and advanced systems.

Do you think such software-based security updates in automobiles will become standard in the future?
