Apple’s iPhone 17, released last September, is poised to break a record that has stood for 15 years in the technology world. According to current rumors, this new flagship model will claim the title of Apple’s longest-running active phone.

The iPhone 4 was released in June 2010 and remained Apple’s most active phone until October 2011. Apple’s shift of its flagship launch cycle from summer to autumn during that period led to the iPhone 4 remaining at its peak for approximately 16 months.

The Long Reign of the iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 era was quite a challenging period for users waiting for the iPhone 5. Following the iPhone 4, Apple introduced the iPhone 4S, which remained almost identical in design but included Siri and camera improvements.

At that time, the iPhone 4 was initially released exclusively for AT&T in the US, then arrived on Verizon six months later, experiencing a 10-month delay with the release of the white model. Since then, no iPhone model has matched the iPhone 4’s long-term leadership of 15 months.

With the iPhone 12 launch delayed during the pandemic, the iPhone 11 Pro came closest to this record, remaining at the top for 13 months. Cycles exceeding four years, seen in models like the iPhone SE series, are not considered flagship models.

A New Record Era with iPhone 17

The iPhone 18 is not expected to be released until spring 2027. This means the iPhone 17 will remain at the pinnacle of Apple’s main lineup for approximately 18 months, breaking the iPhone 4’s record and setting a new standard.

Unlike the iPhone 4 era, the Pro series is currently updated regularly every year. During this long cycle between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18, Apple’s first foldable iPhone model is also expected to be released.

A foldable device is seen as the biggest hardware change in iPhone history. However, the iPhone 17 will set its own record for the longest waiting period among standard flagship models.

The shortest waiting period in iPhone series was with the iPhone X. Released in November 2017, the iPhone X was replaced by a new model after only 10 months of use following the introduction of the iPhone XS.
