Ford’s Efficiency-Focused Electric Pickup: Fathom

Ford’s Efficiency-Focused Electric Pickup: Fathom

Ford announced the Fathom, its new electric pickup model, set to launch in 2027. Details of the vehicle, which has a starting price of $28,000, are in our news.

Ford has announced the name Fathom for its new all-electric pickup truck, which it plans to launch in 2027. The company stated that the starting price for this new vehicle in the US market will be around $28,000.

The new model is built on Ford’s Universal EV platform and its design directly targets high efficiency. The automotive giant argues that using only large batteries is not enough to solve the range anxiety in the electric vehicle world.

Efficiency-focused design details

Ford officials state that large batteries both increase the weight of the vehicle and significantly increase costs. The fact that batteries constitute approximately 40% of the total vehicle cost and 25% of the total load is leading the company to explore different solutions.

The company emphasizes that even a mere 1-millimeter increase in roof height raises battery costs by $1.30 and results in a 0.055-mile loss in range. In pursuit of efficiency, the Fathom model uses mirrors that are 20 percent smaller than usual.

Even the bolt holes on the underside of the vehicle have been specially made shallower to optimize airflow. Furthermore, it is stated that the total cable load in the model is 10 kilograms lighter compared to first-generation electric vehicles.

Technical details and expectations

The Fathom is built on a 48-volt architecture and incorporates LFP battery technology. Ford is currently refraining from sharing official information about the total range offered by the vehicle.

The company defends this new efficiency-focused approach by stating that larger batteries mean heavier and more expensive vehicles. Ford’s strategy is seen as a valuable step in reducing costs and optimizing performance in the electric vehicle market.
