Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech has announced new goals for solid-state batteries , a significant step forward in electric vehicle technology. The company plans to increase the power density of its Jinshi cells to 400 Wh/kg.

The company, in which Volkswagen is the largest shareholder, shared new information about this new technology at the World Manufacturing Convention 2026 event held in Hefei. The power density value, previously announced as 350 Wh/kg, has been increased to a higher level with the work done.

Production Capacity and Mass Production Plans

Gotion is not just keeping its current 350 Wh/kg capacity cells in the laboratory environment. Full solid-state cells, produced at the pilot production limit of 0.2 GWh per year, which was commissioned in 2025, have undergone road tests on real vehicles.

The company is preparing for a larger scale in production. In March 2026, the design of a solid-state battery line with an annual production capacity of 2 GWh was completed.

Gotion had previously announced that it aimed to start small-scale production in 2027. Mass production is indicated for around 2030.

Work continues to overcome the material shortage encountered in the transition of the technology to mass production. In this context, the company signed a cooperation agreement with BASF at the beginning of 2026 on high-performance solid-state battery materials.

Gotion, which has 20 production facilities worldwide, reached a battery capacity of 4.61 GWh as of August 2026. With this performance, the company ranks fifth in the Chinese battery market.

Cost Targets and Safety Performance

A new level has been set regarding cost, one of the biggest obstacles facing solid-state batteries. Gotion plans to reach 1 yuan/Wh in the long term.

This figure corresponds to approximately $150/kWh. However, this goal still represents more than double the cost of the average LFP cells currently used in China.

Jinshi cells are also passing safety tests. It has been reported that no smoke or flames were produced in the cells during puncture and high-temperature tests.

The solid electrolyte structure offers a different safety architecture than classic liquid electrolyte lithium-ion cells. The collaboration with Volkswagen is expanding to include production and supply structures in Europe.

It is not yet clear when the new 400 Wh/kg level will be used in cells close to mass production. How much do you think solid-state batteries can accelerate the adoption of electric cars?
