Porsche has taken a radical step to make electric vehicle ownership more comfortable by announcing a wireless charging system for its electric Porsche Cayenne models. This technology, added to the options list in the European market, aims to improve the user experience by eliminating cable clutter.

This system, offered for vehicles produced at the Bratislava plant in Slovakia, works with a base plate placed on the garage or parking lot floor. Power transfer occurs via a magnetic field thanks to a special unit integrated under the vehicle, and the charging process begins.

Technical Details of Wireless Charging

The system, which works with the wireless charging logic we are used to seeing in smartphones, is comparable to residential wired wall units in terms of its technical specifications. The system provides a highly efficient power transfer, offering a maximum charging power of 11 kW.

Porsche states that the power transfer efficiency from the grid to the battery reaches up to 90 percent. This high efficiency rate clearly demonstrates that wireless charging is on par with wired systems in terms of performance.

The system works integrated with the vehicle’s Park Assist software so that drivers can park the vehicle precisely aligned with the unit on the floor. When the correct positioning is achieved, the charging process starts automatically without the need to connect any cables.

This technology completely eliminates the need for users to make a physical connection to charge the vehicle. Providing great convenience in daily use, this system takes the electric vehicle experience to a much more effortless and modern level.

The system offers the driver significant time savings and practicality when the vehicle needs charging. Especially in private areas such as garages, the fact that charging starts as soon as the vehicle is parked stands out as a valuable comfort element for users.

Cost and factory preparation details

This technology, which offers great ease of use compared to traditional wired charging, is included in the options list with a fairly high price tag. According to the German configurator, the total cost of the system is approximately €7,000.

This cost breakdown includes €1,844.50 for the in-car charging unit and pre-installation, and €5,116.99 for the base plate. This total of €6,961.49 is offered as an option for electric Cayenne users, whose starting price is €105,200.

Porsche also offers a pre-installation package option for €226 for customers who do not currently want to purchase the system but plan to add it later. Without purchasing this factory-installed infrastructure, it becomes impossible to integrate the wireless charging system into the vehicle later.

This technology, which will be gradually introduced in all Porsche Connect markets except China, is not yet clear whether it will be available on the brand’s other electric models. There has been no official announcement yet regarding the Taycan, Macan, and the electric 718 series expected next year.
