Claude is Now Available on Apple CarPlay

Anthropic, with its Claude CarPlay support, allows users to interact with Claude verbally through in-car systems.

Anthropic has introduced Claude CarPlay support for its popular AI app, Claude. This new integration allows drivers to interact with Claude verbally using the in-car infotainment systems.

Apple expanded CarPlay support for third-party chatbots with the iOS 26.4 update. Anthropic has made the Claude app suitable for in-car use based on this update.

What Can You Do with Claude CarPlay?

Those who want to use Claude via CarPlay need to use Apple’s specific CarPlay templates and voice control screens. The application allows users to ask and receive answers to questions verbally in hands-free mode.

However, the system has some limitations; Claude does not have the ability to control in-car equipment or the basic functions of the iPhone. This restriction is implemented within the framework of standards Apple has set for third-party applications to protect driving safety.

Users need to manually open the application via the CarPlay interface to start a conversation with Claude. Since the system does not support third-party wake-up calls, it is not possible to directly launch the application with voice commands.

The CarPlay interface opens with a “Start a hands-free conversation” screen, offering users the option to start a new conversation or access past conversations. This structure aims to make it easier for drivers to access basic functions without taking their attention off the road.

Interface and Usage Details

In-app controls are designed with safety in mind while driving. Users can mute or unmute the microphone during a conversation, end an ongoing conversation, or resume one from where it left off.

In addition, visual cues indicating whether Claude is listening or speaking are displayed on the screen. This visual feedback helps the user understand the system’s current status.

Apple has long restricted the types of applications that can be used on CarPlay to prevent distractions while driving. Therefore, chatbot applications with CarPlay integration are required to obtain special authorization from Apple and adhere to specified templates.

Anthropic has completed all the necessary Apple approval processes and technical requirements to provide this integration. OpenAI had previously launched a similar CarPlay support for its ChatGPT application earlier this year. Anthropic’s step is seen as a valuable development in terms of integrating AI-powered assistants into in-car experiences. How do you think the presence of AI assistants in in-car systems in this form affects your driving experience?
