Chery’s Solid State Battery Initiative: Hitting the Roads in 2027

Chery’s Solid State Battery Initiative: Hitting the Roads in 2027

Battery, Vehicles, Chery, Production, Technology

Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue announced that the company will begin testing solid-state batteries in real-world vehicle conditions in 2027. For this technological breakthrough, Chery has allocated a total investment budget of 10 billion yuan, or approximately $1.5 billion. The company is following a determined roadmap for the development and integration of next-generation battery technologies into vehicles. Safety is at the heart of all technical developments in this process.

Safety-focused battery development process

Yin Tongyue emphasized that safety will be the most fundamental criterion in the integration of the new battery technology into vehicles. The company stated that it would not use any technological solutions in its vehicles that it was deemed not to have reached a sufficient level of safety.

Chery solidified its work on solid-state batteries with the Rhino S battery family, announced in March. This platform aims to develop cells with power densities between 400 Wh/kg and 600 Wh/kg.

The company says that electric cars using these batteries could offer a range of up to 1,500 kilometers on a single charge. According to Chery’s statement, solid-state battery cells with a power density of 400 Wh/kg have already been successfully developed.

One of the first vehicles to be equipped with this technology will be the Exeed ES8 station wagon model, hints of which were shared in December 2025. This model is planned to be used in real-world road tests with solid-state batteries.

Semi-Solid State Batteries and Production Capacity

Chery is continuing its work on semi-solid state batteries as well as full solid state batteries. The company aims to start assembling Rhino solid-liquid battery packs in vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Thus, Chery will have used semi-solid state technology in real vehicles in the nearer term before transitioning to full solid state batteries. On the other hand, Anwa New Energy Technology, a subsidiary of Chery, has also started trial production in solid state battery research.

Anwa is also supported by Gotion High-Tech, which has close ties to Volkswagen. A full-chain production structure from cell to battery production has been established at Anwa’s factory.

The planned annual production capacity of the facility is 1.25 GWh. Many car and battery manufacturers in China are planning to begin trial production or real-world vehicle testing of solid-state batteries in 2027.

Besides Chery, these companies include leading names in the sector such as Gotion High-Tech, Farasis Energy, CALB, CATL, BYD, and Geely. 2027 will be a critical period when solid-state batteries will move from the laboratory environment to being extensively tested in real vehicles.

How do you think batteries offering a range of 1,500 kilometers will change the electric car market?

Chery will begin testing solid-state batteries in real vehicles in 2027. Details about the new technology targeting a range of 1,500 km.
