BMW is preparing to launch its new BMW Maps with Driver Assistance interface, which combines its navigation system with advanced driver assistance technologies. This system, which will be active in supported cars from October 2026, aims to make the driving experience more transparent and visual.

The new interface brings together the vehicle’s route, lane, other vehicles detected in the vicinity, and active driving assistance features in a single three-dimensional scene on the central screen. This allows drivers to instantly monitor how the car perceives its surroundings.

3D Visualization on a Single Screen

While current systems display navigation route and driver assistance information on different screens, the new interface brings them all together in a common 3D scene on the central screen. The driver will be able to see not only the route they need to take, but also which lanes the car is detecting and other road users in their immediate vicinity on the screen.

The vehicle will be positioned on the screen in its actual lane and, in the case of multi-lane highways, at the actual road level. This structure will be particularly helpful for drivers on multi-lane highways, at complex intersections, and during heavy traffic in city centers.

Because the navigation route and the surrounding information obtained from the vehicle’s sensors are displayed together, the driver will be able to follow the route the vehicle is following and what elements in the environment the driving assistance systems are detecting, directly on the screen. The new look does not change the existing automation level of the driving assistance systems.

BMW uses the on-screen visualization to show the driver more clearly how the existing support systems work. The system was developed by the BMW Group and utilizes the Mapbox infrastructure for some of the map information and mapping technology.

Integrated Operation with Highway Assistant

The new BMW Maps also works in conjunction with the brand’s Highway Assistant system. This system allows for hands-free driving by taking over acceleration, braking, and steering control at speeds up to 130 km/h on suitable highways.

When using an active BMW Maps route, Highway Assistant can assist with driving from the entrance to the exit of the highway. In the case of automatic lane change, the driver only needs to confirm the maneuver by looking in the mirror, and the system performs the lane change under suitable conditions.

These processes can also be visually monitored on BMW’s new 3D display. While the vehicle is changing lanes or the driving assistance system is reacting to a reasonable traffic situation, the central display will show the elements it detects around the car and the active assistance system.

BMW also aims to further integrate navigation and automation systems in urban driving. In urban environments, there are numerous variables such as traffic lights, roundabouts, different priority rules, tram lines, and intersections, and the new 3D view allows these to be displayed along with the driving route.

Partially automated city driving features guided by navigation are planned to be offered in Germany from 2027. This function will also be limited to models using BMW Operating System X and equipped with the necessary driver assistance equipment.

The first rollout of BMW Maps with Driver Assistance will begin in October 2026. The feature will only be available on compatible vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System X and Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant, and will vary by country, city, and road.
