The legendary strategy game Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition comes to the Mac platform on May 28 with its expansion packs and renewed graphics.
Age of Empires II, one of the best real-time strategy games of all time, returns to the macOS platform after many years. Publisher Feral Interactive announced that Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will come to Apple computers via Steam on May 28, 2026.
The App Store version of the game will be available to players towards the end of this year. This new port was developed in collaboration with World’s Edge studio, which has been managing the Age of Empires series on behalf of Microsoft since 2019.
Huge Content Pack and Expansion Options
The Definitive Edition, which will be released for Mac, is based on the contents of the original Age of Kings and the hugely popular The Conquerors expansion, just like the PC version. The package does not stop there; It also brings with it three relatively recent DLCs, namely Lords of the West, Dynasties of India and Dawn of the Dukes.
With the advantage of being a remake, updated graphics, renewed music and twenty years of quality of life improvements are fully offered to Mac users.
While it is possible to enjoy hundreds of hours of huge single-player scenarios with just these basic contents, the doors are left open for those who want to get more satisfied with the game. All other add-ons available in the PC version will be available for external purchase, including the series’ newest expansion, The Last Chieftains. In multiplayer modes, players will have instant access to many civilizations in the game.
A Historic Comeback and Lively Gamer Community for Mac
Technically, this development is not the first time Age of Empires II has landed on Mac; The legendary original game was also released for Mac in 2001. However, the comprehensive Definitive Edition version, released on PC in 2019, is the first to come to Apple’s operating system. More interestingly, this move is the first Microsoft game to come to the Mac platform since Psychonauts 2, released in 2021.
While seven years may seem like a long time for a game to be ported to another platform, Age of Empires II’s biggest advantage is that its loyal community has never abandoned the game. According to Steam data, there are currently around 20,000 active players in the game. This huge community means that Mac users can always quickly find opponents in multiplayer matches.
