Source codes and development files of Konami’s legendary game Metal Gear Solid 2 HD have been leaked. The leak also revealed details of the September 11 censorship.
There was a historic leak for Metal Gear Solid 2, one of the most iconic productions in the gaming world. All game assets and source codes of Metal Gear Solid 2 HD, the stealth-action legend produced by Konami and Kojima Productions, were leaked online. This massive data leak presents developers with unique opportunities to restore cut content from the game, mod it, and unearth never-before-seen material.
Not Just the HD Version, All Original Codes Revealed
Famous mod developers Lance McDonald and Afevis Solmunko reveal the extent of the leak with their posts on X (formerly Twitter). According to Solmunko, who has undertaken important works such as MGSHDFix in the Metal Gear mod community, the leaked data does not only cover the HD Remaster version. This archive contains the full source code of the game, dating back to the PS2, Xbox, PC and even PS Vita versions.
With the leak, many secret materials come to light, such as the original E3 trailer scenario files and the “water escape from the tanker section” scene that was removed from the game. Additionally, internal file editors and production tools used by the development team have also been leaked, allowing modders to fully penetrate the game’s architecture.
New Details About September 11 Censorship and Development Process
An in-depth examination of the source codes reveals brand new details about how controversial elements were handled during the game’s development process. As it is known, the game’s release period coincided with the September 11 (9/11) attacks, and sensitive content, such as the scene where the Arsenal Gear hits Manhattan, was immediately censored. Solmunko states that these scenes were not actually completely deleted from the game files, but only the relevant lines of code were disabled (commented out). It is also confirmed that the original E3 and demo files are still preserved among the source codes.
In addition, this historical discovery also proves that the HD version released in 2011 was not created entirely by reverse engineering, as was misunderstood in old Bluepoint Games interviews, but was definitely built using the original source codes. Originally released in the HD Collection in 2011 and currently available in Master Collection Vol. This legendary production, which can be played on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series
