Hyundai is increasing its claim in the off-road segment with its new model Hyundai Boulder. This vehicle stands out as the brand’s first SUV model with a ladder chassis architecture.

The model, which was exhibited as a concept at the last New York Auto Show, is now preparing to go into mass production. Official applications made to the Indian Patent Office in May provide valuable clues about the vehicle’s definitive design.

Art of Steel Design and Off-Road Capabilities

The new model carries the design language that the brand calls “Art of Steel”. This design approach offers a rather rugged look with its flat and high hood line.

The front of the vehicle features slim rectangular LED headlights and vertical daytime running lights. The massive lower grille and exposed tow bars beneath the bumper reinforce the vehicle’s off-road-focused identity. The boxy, angular fenders and massive 37-inch off-road tires reinforce the model’s imposing stance. The sloping A-pillars, reminiscent of the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, are among the most obvious design details. At the rear, the externally mounted spare tire and the sliding tailgate window are retained. The vehicle is positioned as a pure off-road beast, challenging challenging conditions. Boulder’s off-road capabilities include a four-wheel drive system with front and rear differential locks. Additionally, equipment such as a limited-slip gear, independent front suspension, and a rigid rear axle are also included. The tank turn function, which allows the vehicle to rotate around its own axis, stands out among the technical features. These features elevate the vehicle’s off-road performance to the highest level.

Technology and Engine Options

In the production cabin, the wide horizontal front console from the concept model is expected to be retained. While physical buttons will remain, a massive central infotainment screen running the Pleos Connect platform will be used.

This Android Automotive-based system supports associated navigation, an app store, and wireless updates. Additionally, the Gleo AI voice assistant assists drivers with their in-vehicle experience.

The new model is built on a ladder chassis platform made of US-made steel. Sharing some mechanical components with the Kia Tasman or using a new North American-focused architecture is under consideration. Engine options include a 2.5-liter turbocharged hybrid system producing 330 HP. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version boasts 400 HP.

A 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine option producing 207 HP is being priced for global markets. Fully electric versions are being developed for the North American market.
