Sony is offering a free one-year Premium upgrade to some PlayStation Plus members. Here are the details and notable points in the subscription process.
Sony has started offering some PlayStation Plus users a free one-year Premium subscription upgrade. This breakthrough came after the company offered special discounts to users to prevent subscription cancellations.
The company faced intense criticism after announcing that physical versions of new PlayStation games would not be published as of January 2028. While many players chose to cancel their subscriptions after this decision, it was reported that Sony offered various discounts to users in the cancellation process.
Free Premium Upgrade Details
In the r/PlayStationPlus community on Reddit, a user posted that he was offered a free one-year PlayStation Plus Premium upgrade. In the screenshot shared by the user, there is a 100 percent discount for a one-year Premium upgrade on PlayStation Store.
However, there is an important detail about the use of this offer. The user stated that when he wanted to confirm the offer, he would need to make a one-time payment of $26.23 plus tax for the remaining grace period of the current billing period.
The user, whose current PlayStation Plus Essential subscription will expire on July 31, stated that this payment is only received for the remaining days. When the subscription renews on July 31, the free 12-month Premium promotion will be activated and the next renewal date will be set as July 31, 2027.
Scope of the Promotion and Uncertainties
For now, it remains unclear how wide a user base this promotion has reached or what criteria Sony used to make its selection. While it appears that the offer is not open to all users, no official statement has yet been made by PlayStation on the subject.
This strategy of Sony is considered as an effort to calm the reactions caused by the discontinuation of physical game support.
Do you think such special offers from Sony will be enough to maintain user loyalty in the face of physical game debates?
