WhatsApp announced that NSO Group continues its spearfishing attacks targeting its users. Here are the latest legal developments regarding the spyware Pegasus.
With a new statement published on its official blog page, WhatsApp announced that Israel-based spyware producer NSO Group continues its “spearfishing” attacks targeting platform users. The company took a new step in its legal struggle, which has been ongoing since 2019, and applied to the federal court to demand that NSO Group be found at fault for contempt of court. While it was claimed that the digital information of hundreds of journalists, government officials, academics and NGO employees around the world was infiltrated through the spyware called Pegasus, WhatsApp emphasized that these attacks seriously violated user security.
NSO Group’s Pegasus Software Poses a Major Threat
Pegasus spy software, developed by NSO Group, has been used in the espionage activities of many governments to date. The technical capabilities of the software allow it to infiltrate the targeted person’s device and gain full access to messages, photos and position information. The targeting of high-profile individuals, in particular, created a great security concern on a global scale.
The penetration of Pegasus software into vulnerable devices causes digital privacy to disappear completely.
US Federal Court Signed a Historic Decision
The lawsuit filed by WhatsApp’s parent company Meta turned into a valuable legal victory last year. A federal judge in Northern California found that NSO Group violated legal limits and targeted more than 1,400 WhatsApp users, and that these activities violated both state and federal statutes. This decision reinforced technology companies’ commitment to maintaining user security.
Technology Giants Unite Against Spyware
Not only WhatsApp, but also Apple is actively waging a legal effort against NSO Group. After it was discovered that Pegasus had been leaked into iPhone models, Apple filed a lawsuit against the software developer to protect its users. The fact that the US government blacklisted NSO Group shows that the company is stuck internationally.
The cooperation of technology companies on cyber security is gradually narrowing the scope of activity of actors with malicious intent.
The Process is Closely Monitored for User Safety
WhatsApp officials state that they always release updates to protect the platform’s end-to-end encryption protocols. NSO Group’s continued illegal activities despite court orders is causing great reactions in the cyber security world. If the court finds NSO Group at fault for contempt of court, the company’s activities are expected to be further restricted.
