WhatsApp is preparing to add a new feature to the Contacts tab with the aim of improving the user experience. The company is working on a birthday reminder system that reminds users of the birthdays of the people in their contact list directly within the application.

This new feature, discovered in the WhatsApp beta version, automatically detects birthday information in the contact list and displays it next to the names of the people. This innovation, which is still under development and not yet fully available even to beta users, aims to ensure that users do not miss special occasions. The feature doesn’t require any additional manual settings as it’s based on information from the phone’s own address book.

WhatsApp is Designing a New Contacts Tab

WhatsApp is working on a comprehensive navigation update for the iOS interface. The company plans to move status updates and channels to the Chats tab, adding an entirely new Contacts tab to the bottom navigation bar. This strategic change will allow users to see who is online more quickly and streamline the connection process. The Contacts tab allows users to manage the status of the people they interact with in a more transparent way.

Birthday Reminders Appear Automatically

The new system makes it easier for users to instantly notify people whose birthdays are today. WhatsApp will add a notification with a cake emoji and the phrase “Birthday today” for individuals whose birthday information is saved in their contacts.

This visual alert will encourage users to take action directly from their message list without needing to go into the calendar application. The reminder is designed to remain in the Contacts tab for the duration of the birthday person’s day.

Data is Taken from the Phone’s Address Book

WhatsApp does not require users to manually enter birthdays into the application. Instead, the information already in the phone’s address book is read by the software.

If the birthday field is empty for a contact in your address book, simply edit their card and add their birthday information. After the changes are made, WhatsApp automatically updates this information the next time you open it.

Contacts Tab Continues to Be Developed

WhatsApp plans to equip the Contacts tab not only with birthdays but also with more functionality. Enriched with details such as online status indicators and last seen information, this section aims to help users manage their social interactions more efficiently.

Features currently under development are rigorously tested before being rolled out to the stable version. WhatsApp officials aim to make this tab as user-friendly as possible before its general release.

New Feature Not Yet Being Tested

This new feature, currently observed on iOS beta version 26.38.10.18, has not yet been opened to the general beta test set. WhatsApp is continuing to work on improvements in the background to ensure the overall stability of the application.

This feature is expected to enter the testing phase with future update packages. WhatsApp has not yet shared an official date for when birthday reminders will be available to all users worldwide.
