Valve Declares War on Black Marketers

Valve Declares War on Black Marketers

Valve is implementing a reservation queue system to stop black markets on new Steam Machine and Steam Frame launches.

Valve is taking a radical step to block black markets and hoarders in the launch of Steam Machine, its new big move in the hardware world. The company does not want a repeat of the stock crises and exorbitant second-hand sales experienced during the Steam Controller and Steam Deck launches.

In this context, Valve is implementing an advanced reservation queue system for the new Steam Machine models, which are expected to come with four different hardware packages. This new generation gaming machine, one of the most anticipated hardware of 2026, sets out with a distribution strategy that aims to reach real players directly.

Valve’s Fight Against the Black Market: What is the Reservation Queue?

Valve stands out as a company that has learned important lessons from the past regarding hardware launches. As you may remember, during the first release of the Steam Controller, the units sold out within seconds and were soon offered for sale on platforms such as eBay at many times their normal price.

To avoid this annoying situation, the company is now spreading the “reservation queue” model, which it first started with Steam Deck, across the entire new hardware ecosystem.

Code analysis via Steam Tracker shows that Valve has added four different Steam Machine packages and two different Steam Frame packages to its system. In this system, users first enter a queue through their Steam accounts in order to purchase the device.

With this method, Valve both limits each user to a single device and largely prevents bulk purchases made with bot software.

Four Different Models and Storage Options

According to current data, we are presented with four different options in the Steam Machine world. Two of these are currently known models with 512 GB and 2 TB storage capacity. However, the contents of the other two packages seen in the system still remain a mystery. Industry sources state that these additional packages may be special “bundle” options combined with the new Steam Controller.

On the other hand, at a time when the file sizes of today’s games are pushing the 150-200 GB band, it seems quite likely that a 1 TB intermediate model will arrive. Although the 512 GB base model is expected to offer a price advantage, it is estimated that the majority of players will choose at least 1 TB or 2 TB options. With these different configurations, Valve plans to create an entry point for every budget.

A New Era in the Hardware World: Steam Frame is Coming

Valve’s surprises are not limited to Steam Machine. Leaks show that two different models called Steam Frame are on the way. Although its technical details have not been fully disclosed yet, Steam Frame is expected to be a complementary hardware that will take the living room experience to another dimension. All of this hardware combines PC gaming with console comfort by using the power of the SteamOS ecosystem.

Price Uncertainty and Sectoral Competition

The biggest obstacle to the Steam Machine project is seen as costs. When the device was first announced, memory and storage (RAM/SSD) prices around the world were at more reasonable levels. But by 2026, the global increase in parts costs is challenging Valve’s pricing strategy.

People like former Xbox executive Mike Ybarra argue that the Steam Machine is the only real force that can challenge PlayStation’s market leadership. If Valve can launch it at a competitive price by subsidizing hardware costs, the balance in the console wars could completely change.

It is eagerly awaited what kind of price tag the company will set on the launch day with this queuing system that prevents black marketers.
