Trionda, the official ball of the 2026 World Cup, will be charged before the match thanks to the sensors inside and will transfer real-time data to the VAR system.
Trionda, the official match ball to be used in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, contains advanced electronic sensors, unlike classical football balls. This special ball, developed by adidas, is charged before the match and transfers real-time information to the VAR system.
Trionda, which is prepared for the tournament to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, takes its name from its structure representing the three host countries. The red, green and blue colors on the ball also refer to these three countries.
Faster decisions with sensor technology
The match-day versions of Trionda are equipped with a 500Hz IMU motion sensor. This sensor tracks the movements of the ball at high frequency and instantly transmits the information to the VAR center.
Unlike previous systems, the sensor is not located in the center of the ball, but in a special layer inside one of the four panels. The counter scales on the other panels help maintain the flight stability of the ball.
This technology provides critical information to referees, especially in controversial positions such as offside and handball. This information, paired with player location information, enables the moment of contact to be detected more clearly, shortening investigation times.
Since the sensor inside the ball runs on batteries, it needs to be charged before each match. A ball charged to full capacity can be used effectively for approximately six hours.
This duration has been determined to include the regular match duration as well as overtime and possible stoppages. The Al Rihla model used in the 2022 FIFA World Cup also featured a similar technology.
New standards in physical design
Trionda draws attention not only with its electronic infrastructure but also with its new four-panel physical structure. Deep stitching lines and special surface textures increase the stability of the ball in the air and facilitate grip on wet surfaces.

The surface of the ball features symbols such as a star for the USA, a maple leaf for Canada and an eagle for Mexico. The gold details in the design are a reference to the FIFA World Cup trophy.
The tournament, which will start on June 11, 2026, will end with the final match on July 19, 2026, with its new format of 48 groups. Trionda will be at the center of all official matches throughout this expanded tournament.
How do you think the charging of match balls will affect the nature of football?
