The Era of Autonomous Charging in Electric Vehicles Begins

Xiaomi introduced automatic charging handle technology for electric vehicles that does not require driver intervention. Here is the autonomous charging system that will come in 2026.

Chinese technology giant Xiaomi introduced its new generation automatic charging handle system developed for electric vehicles. This technology allows the vehicle to be connected to the charging station without the need for driver intervention.

The system is planned to be commercially launched in the fourth quarter of 2026. With this solution, Xiaomi aims to make electric vehicle ownership more effortless.

Technology that puts an end to driver intervention

The automatic charging handle is designed to work integrated with smart parking functions. After the vehicle is parked, the robotic arm detects the position of the vehicle and automatically connects the charging cable.

The process ends ex officio when the charging process is completed or the user-specified end is reached. The robotic arm disconnects the charging cable from the vehicle, making the entire process completely autonomous.

Users will also have the opportunity to start the charging process remotely via the portable application. As long as the vehicle is within the operating range of the robotic arm, no physical intervention will be required.

Xiaomi stated that this system is not a concept study and was tested in a real-world environment. The company emphasizes that all functions included in the image are production ready.

Competition is heating up in the field of autonomous charging

Xiaomi is not the only company developing autonomous charging solutions for electric vehicles. Other major players in the field also continue to work on similar technologies.

Li Auto is among the companies developing its own automatic charging robot. Company CEO Li Xiang believes that future electric vehicle ecosystems will combine smart parking and autonomous driving.

Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance also exhibited a similar system with the Aito M8 model. This system allows the vehicle to park itself and the charging port to be opened via a robotic arm.

These developments in the sector show that the residential charging experience is evolving towards a completely autonomous structure. Do you think such robotic charging systems are a sufficient solution to popularize the use of electric vehicles?
