Sony has made significant internal changes to the PlayStation 5 Slim models with a quiet hardware overhaul. This new version, unveiled with the Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition PS5 Slim, is particularly noteworthy for the PS5 Slim EDM-051 motherboard difference.

In this new model, Sony has completely changed the placement of components on the motherboard, giving the console a much simpler internal design. The changes are not limited to cutting positions but also directly affect the device’s maintenance and cooling processes.

New Hardware Structure and Motherboard Changes

The EDM-051 motherboard, at the heart of the new PS5 Slim models, offers a different architecture than previous versions. Sony has created a more systematic internal structure by optimizing the placement of components on this new motherboard.

With this revision, the retimer solution used on the HDMI side has also been renewed. The new component stands out with its lower cost and more optimized design.

The HDMI retimer plays a critical role in ensuring that the high-speed video signal from the console is transmitted reliably via the HDMI connection. This change does not directly affect the overall performance or graphics power of the console.

Sony has not yet officially introduced the EDM-051 revision as a separate PS5 Slim model. There is no statement yet on when the changes will be rolled out to all new Slim consoles on the market.

Cooling and Ease of Maintenance

The changes made to the console’s cooling system are important for the long-term use of the device. Sony has redesigned the liquid metal application around the processor, opting for a structure closer to the solution used in the PS5 Pro.

While the protective surface around the APU was changed, the area where the liquid metal can directly contact was made much more controlled. This part also updates the physical structure that helps hold the liquid metal around the processor.

Following the update to the cooling design of the PS5 Slim in 2025, Sony has once again addressed the liquid metal barrier around the APU. In the new version, the structure of the cooler and the materials used also differ from previous revisions.

The most notable innovation on the maintenance side is the placement of the CR2032 button battery. Accessing this battery, which is used in functions such as the console’s internal clock, has become considerably easier with the new revision.

In previous PlayStation hardware, accessing this battery required a more extensive disassembly of the device. The new design significantly speeds up access to this module for users or technical services.

These hardware changes do not include a performance update that increases the console’s processor or graphics power. The innovations consist entirely of motherboard design, ease of maintenance, cooling system, and internal component revisions. How much do you think these kinds of hardware revisions affect the lifespan of the console?
