Google announced today, in an official statement, that it has developed a new system-level procedure that enables the secure transfer of password and passkey data between different password managers across the Android operating system. This update aims at enhancing users’ digital security, eliminating the need for previously cumbersome and insecure procedures.

Users can now seamlessly switch between different applications thanks to Android’s built-in capabilities, without having to transfer sensitive information to unencrypted text documents or manually create passwords one by one. Google has begun supporting this new transfer process in collaboration with leading applications in the sector such as 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane.

Data Transfer is Performed Securely

In the past, switching from one password manager to another posed serious security risks during data export. In particular, saving passwords in plain text documents directly threaten device security.

Android’s newly announced solution transfers information by creating a direct bridge between applications. Because this process is coordinated by the operating system, users’ information remains in an environment protected from external interference.

Users Complete the Transfer Process Easily

The transfer process is presented with a very easy and user-friendly interface. After users log into the password manager application they want to use and select the “import” option, the process is automatically redirected to Android’s Credential Manager interface.

Android detects other password managers installed on the device and presents a list. After the user grants the necessary permissions, the data is transferred to the new application in seconds. The biggest advantage of this technique is that it does not require manual data entry and minimizes the margin of error.

The Ecosystem Expands with API Support

Google is not limiting this feature to its own application. To enable other developers to participate in this system, it has made the Credentials Transfer API service available. Therefore, it is expected that more password manager applications will adapt to this standard protocol in the future.
