Nintendo announced that it will increase the price of the Switch 2 console to $500 as of September 1. This $50 increase is the first price update for the device since its launch in June last year.

The company stated that this decision is a response to changes in market conditions that are expected to continue in the medium and long term. Nintendo officials stated that they understand that price changes can be challenging for customers and appreciate the interest shown by fans in the brand.

New Package Options and Market Conditions

In order to alleviate the impact of the price increase, Nintendo has prepared a new package option called Switch 2: Choose Your Game Bundle. These packages, which will be available for $ 500, contain a digital code to be used to download one of the games Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza or Pokemon Pokopia.

These special packages will be available to players at participating retailers for a limited time during the summer months. When the Switch 2 was released last year, there were concerns about price increases due to customs duties imposed in April 2025, but Nintendo managed to keep the price of the basic model at $ 450 at that time.

The original Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite models were previously subject to a 15 percent price increase. Increases ranging from 5 to 10 dollars were also observed in the prices of accessories.

Global Memory Crisis and Hardware Prices

The main reason for the increase in the price of Switch 2 stands out as the global memory shortage that has affected the technology world. This problem, which started in late 2025, increased the RAM costs needed by data centers as the demand for productive technologies increased.

This situation negatively affects not only Nintendo but also other major players in the industry. While Sony increased the price of the PS5 Pro console from $ 750 to $ 900, Microsoft made similar price adjustments on the Xbox Series X and S models. Valve had to postpone the release of the Steam Machine console due to memory shortage.

Although the rate of increase in RAM prices slowed down in March and April, it seems that it will take time for the market to return to normal. The prices of DDR5 memory continue to be well above the levels in 2024.

Not just RAM, prices for solid state drives have also doubled in many cases for similar reasons. As the demand for hardware components increases, costs in the gaming world are likely to continue to rise.
