New Era in Xbox Cloud Gaming: Free and Advertised Model Being Tested

New Era in Xbox Cloud Gaming: Free and Advertised Model Being Tested

Microsoft started testing a new system with Insider users for Xbox Cloud Gaming, which offers a free 1-hour gaming experience by watching pre-game ads.

In order to increase its argument in the cloud gaming market and expand its player base, Microsoft is starting to test a new, completely free, but advertising-supported option for the Xbox Cloud Gaming service.

This early testing phase, offered to Xbox Insider program members as of July 23, 2026, allows users to play the games they already have in their digital libraries directly from the cloud without paying a monthly subscription price.

The company has set up the system in a very fair way and does not allow advertisements to interrupt the gaming experience; Ads are shown only before the game session starts. This innovation, which offers an alternative solution against increasing hardware and subscription prices, seems to make players very happy.

Watch Ads, Play for Free on the Cloud

In an era where subscription services are becoming increasingly common in the gaming industry, Microsoft is integrating the ad-supported subscription model, which we frequently see on video streaming platforms, into the gaming world. This feature, which was secretly tested within the company last year, is now available to Xbox Insider users.

The operation of the system is based on a very simple basis. If you have previously purchased the game you want to play over the cloud digitally and do not have a paid Game Pass subscription, you can use this new system. When you press the “Start Game” button, a short video ad appears.

Your game starts immediately after the ad ends and you are offered an uninterrupted 1-hour gaming session. If you want to continue the game after an hour, you have to start a new session and watch the ad again. Microsoft guarantees that these ads will not suddenly appear on the screen in the middle of the game and will not necessarily distract the player.

Everything’s the Same for Game Pass Subscribers

So, how are current paying subscribers affected by this situation? Microsoft immediately clarifies this issue. The free and ad-supported model is offered as a completely optional option. So, if you are an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you do not have to watch any ads while playing games.

As a reminder, the technology giant made a significant change in its package structures in October 2025 and included cloud gaming support in the “Game Pass Essential” (formerly known as Core) plan, which is the most affordable option. Essential package, which has a monthly price tag of $9.99 (269 TL for Turkey), offers users the cloud advantage that was previously only available in the Ultimate package in a budget-friendly manner. The newly tested model with advertising targets the audience who do not want to pay a monthly subscription price or who just want to play a few games in their library over the cloud from time to time.

Hardware Limits and Console Requirements are Removed

Behind this breakthrough by Microsoft, there actually lies a much larger ecosystem strategy. New cloud gaming with ads is literally becoming a life-saving feature for gamers with older hardware. For example, a player who has an old generation Xbox One console at home cannot normally play new generation Xbox Series X/S games due to lack of hardware.

However, thanks to cloud technology, these games are run on remote servers and the view is instantly transferred to the old console. Moreover, with this new system, players can access this experience without paying any additional price by simply watching an advertisement. Smartphones, tablets or old laptops are turning into a new generation gaming monster thanks to cloud gaming.

Challenging Process and Price Increases in the Xbox Ecosystem

The ad-supported cloud gaming push comes during a very turbulent period on the Xbox front. The company, which has not been able to achieve the desired acceleration in hardware sales lately, is going to downsize by making radical decisions such as closing game studios and mass layoffs.

There are even changes in game strategies; It is decided to give more weight to the Fallout series, which is the favorite of the players.

In addition to all these, a new development is waiting at the door on the hardware side that will burn the players’ pockets. As of August 1, 2026, Xbox console prices are planned to increase by up to $100. In an economic environment where console prices have increased so much, free and advertised cloud gaming stands out as a much more attractive alternative for gamers.

Let’s see, the feedback from Insider users during the testing process will determine when this new system will be available to all players.
