Meta has started using public Instagram photos as the default for its AI tool Muse Image. Here are the details on how to turn off this feature.
Meta has begun using users’ public Instagram posts and images to power its new AI rendering model, Muse Image. The company implemented a default setting by incorporating content from public accounts of users around the world into its artificial intelligence processes without any notice. While this development reigns the debate on the processing of personal data by artificial intelligence models on social media platforms, it brings to the fore the question of how users will manage their control mechanisms over their own content. This new move by Meta aims to create personalized graphics based on Instagram information in visual content production.
Public Content is Processed by Artificial Intelligence
The newly announced Muse Image technology works in an integrated form between Instagram, WhatsApp and Meta AI platforms. When users tag an Instagram account, public photos of the relevant profile can be automatically taken by the system and a new visual composition can be created. Since this process is completely non-transparent, no warning is sent to content owners.
Users are not even aware that their content is being processed by artificial intelligence.
According to the information on Meta’s help pages, Reels images, posts and stories in public accounts; In addition to various features such as remixing, template creation and sticker design, it can also be used in artificial intelligence-based graphic design processes. Private accounts are excluded from this application for now.
Users Can Manage Permission Settings Manually
Although Meta has activated this feature by default for all public accounts, users have the right to disable it. Going to the Instagram settings menu and turning off the relevant switch in the “Sharing and Reuse” section is enough to prevent future use. However, experts warn that due to the gradual rollout of this feature, some users cannot see the relevant setting option yet.
New Features Will Be Integrated into the System in the Future
The company plans to expand Muse Image technology not only to Instagram but also to Facebook and Messenger platforms in the coming period. It is also stated that advertisers and agencies will be allowed to produce content using this technology and new features such as Muse Video have been developed. As Meta continues to expand its artificial intelligence ecosystem, pressure on user privacy and data security continues to increase.
