Memory Crisis Leads Apple to Chinese Suppliers

Memory Crisis Leads Apple to Chinese Suppliers

Apple is in talks with Chinese manufacturer CXMT due to concerns about global memory chip supply. Here are the latest developments in the technology world.

Apple is holding talks with Chinese manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) in an effort to overcome the global memory chip supply crisis. The company is reportedly considering using this manufacturer’s DRAM chips in iPhone and MacBook models sold in the Chinese market.

This plan requires approval from the United States government. The Washington administration applies strict rules, particularly to American technology companies that cooperate with Chinese companies in chip technology.

Security Concerns and Political Pressure

Although CXMT is China’s largest chip manufacturer, it is considered a national security risk by the US. Described as a Chinese military company by the Biden administration, the manufacturer has previously faced the risk of being placed on a trade blacklist.

Arguments that Apple is lobbying the government for this partnership are met with backlash in the US Congress. Some lawyers argue that this partnership will harm domestic manufacturers like Micron and could lead to the disclosure of technology secrets to Chinese competitors.

A group of senators, led by Senator Chuck Schumer, sent a letter to Apple demanding that the company stop sourcing chips from the Chinese manufacturer. The letter warns that Apple’s move could set an example for other technology companies and increase Chinese influence in the supply chain.

Supply Crisis and its Impact on Prices

Apple, along with other major technology manufacturers such as Acer, HP, and Asus, is joining companies turning to controversial Chinese suppliers to meet increasing memory needs. Accelerated investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure has driven demand for high-bandwidth memory chips to record levels.

While chip manufacturers are primarily allocating their capacity to the artificial intelligence sector, smartphone and computer manufacturers are facing a significant supply crisis. This situation is causing delays and price increases in consumer electronics products.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, in his recent earnings call, highlighted the impact of the exponential increase in memory prices on the company. Stating that the company has been forced to increase prices on some products to balance costs, Cook indicated that market conditions may continue to worsen in the near future.

It is reported that Apple is seeking alternative solutions to this supply crisis and is lobbying in Washington for chip allocation to non-AI sectors.

How do you think Apple’s move will affect the competitive stability of the global technology market?
