Nvidia is having a tough time in the Chinese market. DeepSeek preferred Huawei Ascend 950DT chips over Nvidia.
Nvidia continues to be in the spotlight due to the difficulties it faces in the Chinese market. Sanctions imposed by the US and China’s aim for technological independence are shaking the company’s dominance in the region.
This situation is leading to questioning Nvidia’s presence in the region, while accelerating the rise of local manufacturers. Huawei’s AI chip designs are creating a new and powerful alternative for the tech giants in the region.
Huawei’s Rise and DeepSeek Order
DeepSeek has reached an agreement for 160,000 Huawei Ascend 950DT chips for use in data centers. The total cost of this massive order is approximately $2.56 billion.
DeepSeek made this choice because it is more cost-effective compared to Nvidia H20 accelerators. Nvidia H20 accelerators have a price tag almost twice as high as the solutions offered by Huawei.
This price difference is prompting large-scale companies like DeepSeek to turn to Huawei in their search for cost savings. Huawei plans to deliver these orders over the next year.
This process is considered a component of the Chinese tech giant’s strategy to strengthen its own ecosystem. Nvidia’s inability to compete with Huawei in terms of both pricing and company choices is rapidly eroding its market share.
Technical Details and the Future of Competition
Huawei Ascend 950DT stands out as a powerful hardware developed with a 7nm manufacturing process. Equipped with 144GB of HiZQ 2.0 HBM memory, these chips offer 4TB/s memory bandwidth.
The connection speed between graphics units reaches 2TB/s. The accelerators used in Huawei’s Atlas 950 SuperPoD provide 8 EFLOPS of AI performance.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang previously stated that their presence in the Chinese market had almost completely disappeared. The company’s future in the region is becoming even more uncertain due to the restrictions imposed and the increasing number of local alternatives.
China’s investments in domestic chip manufacturing are fundamentally changing the stability of the global chip market. Huawei’s high-performance solutions are making it difficult for Nvidia to maintain its presence in the region.
This technological transformation means not only a change of company but also a reshaping of global supply chains. Huawei’s success demonstrates the strength of domestic production in the Chinese market.
