Apple’s iOS 27 update changes 15-year-old habits, moving notification center access to a new Siri AI-driven gesture system.
With iOS 27, Apple is testing an update that has radically changed the habits of iPhone and iPad users since 2011. The access system to the Notification Center, which entered our lives with iOS 5 and where notifications are listed chronologically, enters a new era with the integration of Siri AI into the system.
As seen in current beta versions, swiping down from the top middle of the screen no longer triggers notifications, but the new artificial intelligence-based Siri interface. This fundamental change clearly reveals Apple’s strategy of restructuring its 15-year-old user experience practices with a focus on artificial intelligence.
Siri AI Takes Over New Gesture Controls
Although the default method of accessing notifications remains the same in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, users encounter a new interface logic when the Siri AI feature is activated.
The middle swipe gesture made from the top point of the iPhone and iPad screens now directly launches the artificial intelligence assistant. This starts a new learning process for users who have been using this gesture to see notifications for more than ten years.
Apple directs users to the upper left corner of the screen, which is a smaller area, to access notifications.
Notification Center is Moving to the Upper Left Corner
iPadOS 27 beta versions show more clearly how this change is reflected visually. The remaining space above the app icons is largely reserved for Siri AI use.
The layout problems experienced in the first beta version were made more systematic with the second version, and the left part of the screen was allocated to notifications and the right part was allocated to the Control Center.
By achieving this balance, Apple aims to create a hierarchy between artificial intelligence and existing operating system tools.
Muscle Memory is Rebuilt
Apple has made similar radical interface changes in the past. Moving the Control Center from the bottom of the screen to the upper right corner with the iPhone X required an unprecedented adaptation process at that time.
However, this change in iOS 27 has a broader impact because it targets an interaction point directly at the center of the system. Although early beta users are happy with the performance of Siri AI, the difficulty of abandoning 15-year-old habits continues to be discussed.
Do you think changing this 15-year-old habit is a logical choice for new artificial intelligence features, or is Apple making the interface more complex? Don’t forget to share your opinions with us in the comments section.
