The performance difference between wired and wireless gaming mice has almost disappeared with new generation technologies. Here is a new hardware comparison.
For many years, it was accepted in the technology world that there was a significant performance gap between wired and wireless gaming mice. Especially in competitive gaming, wireless models were avoided due to latency, but current technologies have completely changed this.
Thanks to modern hardware, the latency difference between wired and wireless gaming mice has now been reduced to a fraction of a millisecond. Professional gamers’ preferences have largely shifted towards wireless models with this change.
New Standards of Performance
Input latency and polling rate are among the key elements that determine the performance of a gaming mouse. Input lag refers to the time it takes for a mouse movement to be detected by the computer and displayed on the screen.
Polling rate, on the other hand, is a critical data point indicating how many times per second the mouse reports its position and inputs to the computer. A standard office mouse usually operates at a 125 Hz polling rate, sending information to the computer every 8 milliseconds.
In high-end gaming mice, this value can reach up to 8,000 Hz. In 8,000 Hz touch technology, new information is transmitted to the computer every 0.125 milliseconds.
Touch lag, the biggest problem wireless gaming mice faced in the past, has largely been eliminated thanks to current 2.4 GHz USB receivers. While latency times in modern wireless mice generally range between 0.5 and 1 millisecond, some models can go even lower.
Wired mice, on the other hand, experience latency between 0.3 and 1 millisecond. Bluetooth connectivity is not directly preferred in high-performance gaming; because 2.4 GHz USB receivers can offer a much higher polling rate and lower latency.
Sensor Technology and User Preferences
Latency and polling rate alone are not the sole determining factors in mouse selection. DPI determines how far the cursor travels on the screen when the mouse is physically moved one inch.
While very high DPI values may seem advantageous on paper, in competitive games, excessive sensitivity can lead to the detection of unintentional vibrations. Tracking speed or IPS value is also very important for the sensor to maintain tracking during fast movements.
Especially for FPS players who play with low sensitivity, the sensor needs to perfectly maintain a high tracking speed. When comparing current wired and wireless mice, there is no significant difference in DPI and tracking speed due to connectivity issues.
The quality of the sensor used and the software settings made by the manufacturer have become much more decisive in terms of connectivity. Information from the professional esports world clearly reflects this change.
According to 2025 data, all of the top 10 most used gaming mice are wireless models. Top-level competitive players can now play with almost the same latency values as wired models without the friction and movement restrictions caused by cables.
The main disadvantages of wireless models are more about price and battery life than performance. Due to 2.4 GHz connectivity and built-in batteries, wireless mice are generally sold at higher prices compared to their wired counterparts.
Battery life has significantly increased in new generation wireless mice, and some models can offer over 100 hours of use on a single charge. When the battery runs out, multiple models can continue to be used while charging via USB cable.
Wired mice continue to maintain their advantage due to not requiring batteries or charging and their easier contact. However, when it comes to input lag and sensor performance, the difference is now almost negligible.
