Huawei’s New Kirin 9050 Pro Processor Introduced

Huawei has taken a significant step in the technology world by announcing its new portable processor, the Kirin 9050 Pro. This new chip claimed to be the most powerful processor the company has ever developed, is used in the Mate XT 2 device. Huawei states that this processor is completely independent of American technology. The Mate XT 2, which went on sale in the Chinese market on September 12, 2026, attracts attention with this new hardware.

Kirin 9050 Pro and Performance Data

Huawei’s consumer group president, Richard Yu, stated in his presentation that this processor is the company’s most powerful Kirin chip to date. According to performance data, this new processor offers a 42% overall improvement compared to the Kirin 9020 used in the previous generation Mate XT models.

Chip-level information reveals 24% higher single-core and 52% better multi-core performance compared to the Kirin 9030 Pro. In addition, a 142% increase is observed in graphics processing.

The nine-core LinxiCore processor unit can reach speeds up to 3.1 GHz. The Maleoon GPU unit offers hardware-based ray tracing support, while the Da Vinci NPU unit can run a model with 30 billion parameters on the device.

However, it should be noted that all this performance information is shared directly by Huawei and has not undergone an independent verification process. The company has not submitted any peer-reviewed studies or impartial analyses.

LogicFolding Technology and Manufacturing Process

The Kirin 9050 Pro is the first commercial silicon produced using a new technique that Huawei calls LogicFolding. This technique was detailed by Huawei semiconductor chief He Tingbo at the IEEE ISCAS event in Shanghai in May.

LogicFolding technology combines logic circuits face-to-face by dividing them into two active silicon layers instead of miniaturizing transistors. This structure has approximately 50 million vertical contact points at intervals of about 1.5 micrometers.

By allowing signals to travel in shorter intervals, Huawei states that it can increase density while reducing the operating voltage. This approach brings a different perspective to classical manufacturing techniques.

The equipment used in the manufacturing process continues to attract attention. Huawei has not shared any node information regarding the processor’s manufacturing process.

Previous analyzes have shown that SMIC uses N+3 technology, a third-generation 7nm process. While it is known that extreme ultraviolet lithography is not used in this process, ASML immersion scanners are still at the production limit.

According to a 2024 Bloomberg report, SMIC is known to have used Applied Materials and Lam Research equipment when producing previous Kirin 9000s processors. The use of this equipment continues with hardware supplied before the export regulations of 2022.

Huawei has made significant progress in reducing American influence since 2019. The absence of American components in the Mate 30 Pro model was seen in analyzes by UBS and Fomalhaut Techno Solutions.

The company’s efforts in this area are considered an ongoing endeavor. Industry players predict that Huawei’s rate of closing the performance gap is higher than expected.
