Handheld Consoles Will Be Excited with Windows 11 Auto SR Feature

Auto SR, an artificial intelligence-supported upscaling technology included in the Windows 11 operating system, has gained a concrete usage area for the first time with the tests carried out on the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld console. This innovative solution, which actively uses the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) hardware in the processors, provides a significant increase in game performance by removing the graphics load from the GPU.

Extensive testing carried out by ETA PRIME proves that the technology significantly increases frame rates while improving image quality in games.

  • Auto SR technology performs image upscaling in games directly via the NPU instead of the GPU or CPU.
  • The tests provide a performance increase of around 42% in God of War Ragnarok and around 30% in productions such as Cyberpunk 2077 and RDR2.
  • The technology is currently only in beta phase and is compatible with all games that support DirectX 10 and above.

NPU Power Contributes to Gaming Performance

While traditional upscaling technologies, DLSS, FSR, and XeSS, typically focus the processing load on the graphics unit (GPU), Windows 11’s new Auto SR technology brings hardware-based NPU resources into play.

This approach aims to provide a smoother gaming experience, especially on portable devices, by increasing the overall efficiency of the system. It can successfully optimize image clarity even at low resolutions such as 720p.

Auto SR offers up to 40% performance improvements in games by using NPU hardware efficiently.

The Limits and Future of Technology Are Determined

This feature, which is currently being tested in beta on ROG Xbox Ally X, can only be used when the console is connected to the dock.

Although the effects on battery life cannot yet be fully observed due to this limited usage scenario, it is theoretically expected to provide an advantage in power consumption thanks to the use of NPU. In addition, it is a remarkable development that this infrastructure, which previously could only work in certain games, has now been expanded to support all modern games with DirectX 10 and above.

With this move, Microsoft brings artificial intelligence integration to the gaming world for Windows 11 users.

Restrictions Being Lifted in the Near Future

The fact that the technology is still in beta phase signals that it will be included in more devices and more flexible usage scenarios with future updates.

Especially for portable gaming computer owners, this NPU-based optimization paves the way to reach higher FPS values ​​without sacrificing graphics settings. With the transition of the software to the stable version, NPU blocks are expected to become a standard component in the gaming world.
